Tasting NOTES

Hailing from a string of great Sonoma vintages (2012-15), this vintage stands out for our winemaking team as one of both exceptional quality and structure. Structure being the key word here, the 2013 Heritage Selection Pinot Noir, from our block of 46-year old vines, tastes young and tightly wound. To be sure, this is an absolute gem of a wine: a delicate, ruby color tantalizes while the lifted, almost creamy aromatics offer layers of pristine raspberry, gorgeous dusty rose petal, as well as a cocoa and vanilla-spice driven backbone -- a hallmark of these tiny Pinot Noir grapes. The palate, while silky smooth and framed by soft tannins, subtle dark fruit and wisps of brown spices, merely alludes to the magnificence and complexity that can only come from time-a future prima ballerina who has only had her first recital. We recommend aging this beauty for at least five years from vintage, with a potential of 12+ years to come. If you are too enchanted to wait that long -- and trust us, after tasting it, we struggle to hold back ourselves -- please decant for no less than an hour.

Vineyard NOTES

Eight miles north of San Pablo Bay, the Bundschu family's 158 year-old vineyard wraps around the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.

Terrain below 150 feet elevation features gently sloping Huichica clay loam soils with gravel deposits and cooler growing conditions that deliver minerality and focused acidity. Wines grown in these blocks bear the Sonoma Coast designation to reflect their cool climate character.

One distinct block of 45-year-old Heritage vines is harvested for this limited bottling.

Production NOTES

Optically sorted and gravity fed to fermentation vessels.

Seven-day cold soak, indigenous yeast and malolactic.

Partially fermented in upright open-top French oak puncheons and gently punched down by hand twice daily.
