Tasting NOTES

When is a Cab not a Cab? Well, frankly, when it's a Franc. Living in the shadow of its Sauvignon offspring and confusing consumers longer than the 30 years the Bundschus have been making it, our estate Cabernet Franc has its own distinct personality shaped by earthy/savory finesse and plentiful tannins. The 2016 is alluringly aromatic with chocolate-covered cherries, ripe plum, and sweet spices layered with forest floor, graphite, and bay leaf. Flavors of cranberry and cocoa on the palate are tightly wound by firm tannins, giving an impression of more weight than its true medium body. Refreshing acidity gives life to this complex blend of savory fruit and earth that will continue to allure--and maybe pleasantly confound-- over its 10+ year lifetime.

Vineyard NOTES

Eight miles north of San Pablo Bay, the Bundschu family's 150+ year of vineyard wraps around the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains. It's here that our eight acres of Caber-net Franc vineyards experience a 10 degree heat difference from the valley floor during the summer growing season, allowing the fruit to fully ripen. Planted at 100 feet elevation with the Mt Veeder clone in 1999 and 2005, it features Rhyolitic ash and alluvial wash soil so the vines struggle to reach root depth. This combination produces deeply colored, extracted but balanced wines. Yields 4 tons/acre.
