2021 Vintage Reserve
Sonoma ValleyRated 96pts by James Suckling and 95pts by Wine advocate. The 2021 artwork by Daisy Hardman guides the viewer through the seasons of regenerative farming, with vine leaves unfolding as a visual metaphor for growth and renewal.
Tasting NOTES
Since 1981, the Bundschu Family has crafted a limited Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve from the most elegant and expressive barrels in the cellar a wine that serves as our north star for winemaking each year. The 2021 vintage is ripe and full-bodied, with deep, layered aromas of pipe tobacco, tobacco leaf, and spiced tea biscuit mingling with lush purple fruit. On the palate, rich flavors of ripe plum and dark berry are framed by warm baking spice and a savory undercurrent. Powerful yet balanced, this wine delivers a long, refined finish and the structure to cellar for decades. Pairing Suggestions: Peking duck with crispy skin and plum sauce, roasted tomato and anchovy bucatini, Spanish roasted red pepper salad, wild mushroom risotto, or classic paella.
The 2021 Vintage Reserve label, created by designer Daisy Hardman, began as a black ink and pen piece on white watercolor paper, later inverted digitally for added depth and drama. The artwork guides the viewer through the seasons of regenerative farming, with vine leaves unfolding as a visual metaphor for growth and renewal.
Rated 96 Points James Suckling
"A full-bodied and powerful wine that is layered and complex. Earth, tobacco, black fruit, blue fruit, violets, graphite, acidity and tannins intermingle with structure and plushness. Sourced from some of the oldest vines and highest elevations."
Vineyard NOTES
Since 1981, the Bundschu family has crafted a limited bottling of the vintage's most elegant and expressive vines with the designation Vintage Reserve. Winemaker Joe Uhr selects individual barrels to blend a wine that showcases the distinctive character of Cabernet-family grapes grown on the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. Our 165-year-old estate vineyard lies eight miles north of San Pablo Bay on steep, shallow soils of volcanic ash, exposed to pervasive maritime breezes, long daylight hours and extreme diurnal temperature shifts. Top blocks with less yields are farmed specifically for Vintage Reserve.
Production NOTES
The 2021 vintage was one of low yields and exceptional quality. Though faced with severe drought conditions, our intimate knowledge of the estate (and advanced soil-monitoring) allowed us to coax the vines into yielding a small but concentrated crop across all varieties. The summer was wonderfully uneventful. Harvest began in early September and continued until mid-October when a torrential rainstorm brought it to a decisive close. The year may have offered a lack of rain and moisture but there was no shortage of quality, producing beautiful wines of richness and depth.
