Tasting NOTES

Overcoming its reputation as a blending grape once and for all, the 2014 Cabernet Franc kicks butt as a single varietal. Floral aromas mix with dark chocolate, black cherry and strong brewed tea. Brooding yet sexy flavors of dusty, dark chocolate-covered cherries and blackberries combine with clove and anise to reveal an elegant yet subtly powerful wine. Tannins approach quietly and integrate nicely with a lush texture. This wine will benefit from 30 minutes of decanting before enjoying and will continue to develop personality over the next ten years. It would pair nicely with a savory duck breast, slow roasted beef or a five spice pork belly.

Vineyard NOTES

Eight miles north of San Pablo Bay, the Bundschu family’s 150+ year of vineyard wraps around the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains. It’s here that our eight acres of Cabernet
Franc vineyards experience a 10 degree heat difference from the valley floor during the summer growing season, allowing the fruit to fully ripen. Planted at 100 feet elevation with the Mt Veeder clone in 1999 and 2005, it features Rhyolitic ash and alluvial wash soil so the vines struggle to reach root depth. This combination produces deeply colored, extracted but balanced wines. Yields 4 tons/acre.

Production NOTES

A favorite with many of our Gun Bun fans, Cabernet Franc is one of our very small production wines. Rhinefarm delivers some pretty fantastic tannin and weight to this grape. It’s often
used as a blending grape in France, where hails from, but bottling this varietal alone offers a glimpse into the spicy characteristics inherent in Rhinefarm’s soil. This year, our Cabernet Franc is floral but other vintages it’s spice-driven. But never, ever boring. We let the grape be what it wants to be while still keeping an eye on it during the growing season.
